Common Causes of Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints among our patients. The lower back – also known as the lumbar region of the spine – is a fragile and extraordinary assembly. It is made up of several interconnecting muscles, nerves, bones, ligaments, and joints working together to provide the body with flexibility, strength, and support.
This delicate nature makes this area prone to injury. If any sole component of this multifaceted structure is disturbed then the whole area is compromised and often endures consequences that include loss of mobility, stiffness, and pain.
In the lower back, pain is most often caused by a soft tissue injury. These include strains, sprains, and damage caused by an accident such as an automotive or sporting accident. Other causes include improper lifting, poor ergonomic support, the improper carrying of weight, and other everyday issues.
More chronic and serious causes of lower back pain include anything that causes the pain to last for more than three months. At this point, it is generally considered to be chronic and beyond the body’s natural ability to heal.
Among the common causes of this more serious lower back issue are facet or sacroiliac joint dysfunction, degenerative disc disease, herniated lumbar disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and osteoarthritis. In addition, improper curvature of the spine like scoliosis and kyphosis as well as traumas such as dislocation or fracture can also lead to lower back pain.
Other, less common, causes of lower back pain include autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease or fibromyalgia, tumor, and osteomyelitis – a rare condition that is extremely painful and life-threatening.
How Our Chiropractor Can Help
After evaluating your unique condition and determining the cause of your lower back pain, our chiropractor and the rest of our multi-disciplinary team will develop a treatment regimen. This will include chiropractic techniques from the more than 150 that are approved by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). Some of the techniques that may be used include therapeutic massage, manual spinal manipulation, and spinal decompression therapy. However, the exact plan will depend entirely on the patient’s needs.
