NATIONAL CHILDHOOD OBESITY AWARENESS MONTH
The growing predominance of childhood obesity is a serious concern here in the United States, with statistics from the Centers for Disease Control estimating that one in five children are obese. With the magnitude of this issue in mind, the month of September has been designated as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Here at Churn Creek Chiropractic in Redding, CA, our chiropractor hopes everyone will take time this year to learn more about this rising epidemic and help spread the word throughout their community.
The High Cost of Childhood Obesity
Besides self-esteem issues and social isolation experienced by many overweight children, there are physical problems and chronic diseases such as cancer that can also become problematic. Many kids suffer from additional health conditions that are either caused or further exacerbated by obesity such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Many children require chiropractic care and other medical interventions early on to help heal and restore the body from imbalances caused by the presence of extra weight.
Tips for Preventing Obesity in Children
Many factors influence a child’s weight such as genetic background and socioeconomic conditions. However, there are many ways parents and educators can help kids with weight management every day including:
- Supply plenty of kid-friendly snacks that are filled with nutrition and low on calories. Fresh veggies, healthy nuts and fruits are excellent choices.
- Have ample drinking water on hand in lieu of high calorie beverages or ‘energy’ drinks.
- Be sure to keep children motivated with opportunities to get physical every day with age-appropriate activities.
- Parents and educators can set a good example by following these tips themselves!
