Auto Accident Injury FAQs by Churn Creek Chiropractic
Auto accidents can leave with with aches, pains -- and questions. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about auto accident injury treatment.
Are low-speed injuries as severe as high-speed injuries?
Even if your vehicle was only going at a few miles per hour, a car accident can produce serious injuries. It doesn't take much force, for instance, to strain muscles and jolt the spinal column out of its normal alignment.
What did I do to my neck?
If you're experiencing neck pain and find it difficult to turn your head, you may suffering from whiplash. Whiplash occurs when the head is flung forward and then whipped backward from an impact. It can also produce headaches, dizzy spells, jaw pain, shoulder pain, ringing in the ears and pain tingling, weakness or loss of sensation in the upper extremities.
How did my back get injured?
The jolt from an auto accident can throw the thoracic or lumbar vertebrae out of alignment. Twisting from the impact can also injure the large muscles and ligaments that support the back, leaving you with severe back pain and stiffness.
My legs look uninjured, but they're in terrible pain.
What happened? The same impact that dislocates vertebrae can also cause one or more vertebral discs to herniate. When these protrusions push against the the roots of the sciatic nerve, you may experience the leg pain, numbness, "pins and needles," weakness and balance problems collectively known as sciatica.
How can your chiropractor help?
Our chiropractor, Dr. Donovan Hutchings, performs detailed spinal screenings, taking x-rays and studying your symptoms to determine whether you've suffered a spinal misalignment. He can then administer chiropractic adjustments to the pat of the spine that needs to be corrected, relieving nerve pressure, pain and other symptoms.
When would you prescribe massage therapy for a car accident injury?
Our chiropractor may prescribe massage therapy before a chiropractic adjustment to relieve muscle stiffness and pain. Massage therapy also boosts blood flow to injured tissues, reducing swelling and inflammation while ensuring that the tissues have the nutrients they need to heal as quickly as possible.
I feel all right following my auto accident. Am I just lucky?
You may not be as lucky as you think. Some car accident injuries don't manifest themselves for months, causing people to delay examination and treatment while additional complications develop. That's why spinal screenings are always critical if you've been in an accident -- the earlier we catch the underlying injury, the more easily we can treat it.
